Today is a big day for my Mum and I!
After a few months of illness, not eating, becoming weaker, suffering from sickness and diarrhea, and several falls – Mum hurt her back and ended up in hospital.
As you know, I am an Independent Financial Advisor and I specialise in Later Life planning, especially Long Term Care planning. Having worked in this field for many years, I have advised numerous clients regarding the options of how to fund care.
Care Homes are not cheap, requiring c£50,000 a year! I am able to set out the financial options for funding and help people to make informed decisions. Knowing how to pay the fees, importantly that the fees can be paid, for as long as required gives the resident (in this case, my Mum) and their family (me) peace of mind.
Mum had been in hospital for 10 days or so and decided it would be a good idea to go into a home for a few weeks, or maybe longer. She is excited about the prospect and I am waiting in reception to welcome her and settle her into her new home!
Whilst the family have concerns about her loss of appetite and her deteriorating health, her only concern is whether she could afford to come into a home or not, even if only for a few weeks.
I have visited quite a few homes as part of my job and visited even more this week, only looking through the eyes of a worried son, as opposed to a professional advisor. It’s daunting as there are many factors to consider (location, availability, cost, ambiance, etc) . It hasn’t been easy, as the first choices had no availability or were in the wrong location. We eventually, however, settled on a fairly new home which appears to be lovely, modern and reasonably quiet.
We’re taking it one step at a time, but there’s lots to do, especially if this move becomes permanent. It’s all a bit daunting, clearing and selling the house, etc, but it will be incredibly beneficial in my professional capacity to have first hand experience to draw upon when advising clients!
Most important though, is that Mum is settled in a home she feels comfortable in and within her budget.
